Frequently asked questions

what are your fees?

Beamish Law is committed to providing high-quality and accessible legal services, particularly for Indigenous people(s), people belonging to other equity-seeking groups, and not-for-profit organizations. We charge fees on a sliding scale in line with this commitment, and in accordance with the nature and complexity of your matter.

We will discuss with you how to tailor our fees, billing, and services to fit your needs and budget. Our services may include full representation, unbundled services focused on the more complex or technical aspects of your matter, or coaching and guidance so you can more confidently represent yourself.

We also take on a limited amount of significantly discounted or pro bono (free) work that supports social justice or public interest goals.

do you charge a consultation fee?

We charge a consultation fee of $175 plus tax for an initial phone or video consultation about your matter during our regular business hours, or $200 plus tax for a consultation outside of our regular business hours. This consultation is to discuss things such as the facts of your matter, your legal goals and options, preliminary advice, and potential retainer arrangements. We may charge a higher consultation fee if the nature or complexity of your matter requires an unusually long consultation or significant preparation, or if you prefer to meet in person.

We may reduce or waive our consultation fee in limited circumstances.

when and where can we meet?

We ordinarily meet new clients by phone or video call.

If you are in Toronto, we can also meet you at 197 Spadina Ave, Suite 402. Meetings are by appointment only - no walk-ins.

We can also meet at locations that are more convenient for you, although this may incur a fee.

Do you offer student placements?

We typically recruit law students for four-month full-time placements, on a paid basis or for academic credit. We also occasionally offer short-term volunteer opportunities for other students who are interested in learning more about legal practice.
