Thoby King is an Associate Lawyer with Beamish Law.

Thoby has acted in matters before the Supreme Court of Canada, Ontario Court of Appeal, Superior Court of Justice, Ontario Court of Justice, Federal Court, Small Claims Court, Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, Landlord and Tenant Board, Social Security Tribunal, Social Benefits Tribunal, Office of the Police Review Director (now the Law Enforcement Complaints Agency), Ontario Civilian Police Commission, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, and the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario.

Before joining Beamish Law, Thoby worked in the clinic system in the areas of employment, housing and social assistance and in private practice with a focus on racial justice.

Thoby is also a writer with a focus on law and activism. His work has been published in Jacobin, Rabble, The Maple, the Law of Work blog, the Canadian Labour & Employment Law Journal, and the 2025 anthology Razing Palestine: Punishing Solidarity and Dissent in Canada from Baraka Books. In both his legal work and his writing, he is interested in how the law impacts movements for social justice and how it can be used by those combatting oppression and seeking positive change.

EDUCATION

Thoby received his Juris Doctor from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in 2020. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and Creative Writing from Concordia University and a Bachelor of Education from York University. He is licensed as a teacher by the Ontario College of Teachers.

When not at work, Thoby enjoys cooking, eating, podcasts, audiobooks, and learning about what’s going on in the world.
